I bet that anyone who cares about productivity already heard the words: Smart Goals. What are they?

Introduction to S.M.A.R.T Goals

SMART goal setting brings structure and trackability into your goals and objectives. Instead of vague resolutions, SMART goal setting creates verifiable trajectories towards a certain objective, with clear milestones and an estimation of the goal’s attainability. Every goal or objective can be S.M.A.R.T. and as such, brought closer to reality.

Why not think of a small goal you want to set right now, personal or professional. To make your goal S.M.A.R.T., it needs to conform to the following criteria: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.

Attributes Explanation Example
Specific Specificity makes goals more achievable. ‘Cause you know clearly how you’re gonna achieve each period of time. Instead of setting goals to lose “few” kg a month, set goals to lose 5 kg of that month.
Measurable Making sure that any metric requirement in the goal is clearly defined and has specific numbers attached to it. Along with exercising hard,  jump on the scale and track the numbers every week.
Attainable Meaning that the goal can be accomplished and is not some crazy “pie in the sky” dreamlike tripping your salary in three months You shouldn’t set unrealistic goals such as to lose 30 kg a month
Relevant  The goal really matters and is worth your time and effort. Getting in-shape helps me a lot in real life: career, relationship…
Timely Where the goal starts and stops (and any steps along the way) are all tied to specific dates. 1 month from now

How to fill out S.M.A.R.T. goal setting form:

STEP 1: What is the goal?

This section is important because it helps you to define, in as simple terms as possible, what you expect from the goal.

Your goal should be:

  • No more than two-three sentences
  • Include exactly what needs to be accomplished
  • Completion date
  • How will you know the goal is done?
  • How will the goal be done?
  • Who is in charge of completing the goal?

STEP 2: Why is this goal important?

This is a reality check. People often have goals they desire but are not willing to put the effort in to accomplish. Does this goal really matter?

  • Why does it matter to you?
  • Is it a personal goal?
  • Is it a business goal?
  • How will accomplishing the goal affect your life?
  • How will it advance you in your business or career?

Share the reasons this goal is important and see if it something you really want to pursue.

Having too many goals only ensure that you achieve none of them.

STEP 3: Goal Action Items. and the due date for each.

Some goals are simple, and won’t need action items. Other goals are more complex and you may need some control over moving parts. Specifically, parts of your overall goal delegated to others. That is where these action items come in.

Consider each action item as a mini-goal. Each is a task that needs to be completed by a specific person, on a specific date to ensure that the overall goal is completed on time.
